Skills gap analysis

Turn changing work into a skills-gap plan

A useful skills gap starts with the work you want to improve or move toward—not a generic list of trending courses.

Career pathways become clearer when changing tasks, transferable strengths and adjacent roles are considered together.

Start with a task, output and quality standard

“Learn AI” is too broad to guide a course choice. Name the task you want to perform, the output it must produce and how a knowledgeable person judges good work.

That makes the gap observable: you may need better prompting, but you may instead need domain knowledge, verification, data handling or stakeholder communication.

Prioritise gaps by use—not popularity

Rank a skill higher when it appears in recurring work, affects a consequential result and can be practised safely.

A useful plan often combines tool operation with the human capability required to inspect and own the result.

  • AI output verification
  • Workflow redesign
  • Evidence communication
  • Data governance and safe handling
  • Change leadership and adoption

Turn learning into proof

A certificate records attendance or assessment under course conditions. Employers and clients often need evidence that you can use the skill in context.

Build a bounded work sample, state the quality criteria, preserve the before-and-after process, ask an informed reviewer for one hard criticism and record what changed after the review.

Use a 30/60/90-day sequence

In the first 30 days, learn the minimum concepts and complete one low-risk practice case. By day 60, repeat the workflow on varied inputs and measure corrections, time and failure modes.

By day 90, publish or present a reviewed example with its limitations. Stop or change direction when the evidence does not support continued investment.

Keep the plan connected to a decision

The purpose is not to collect more skills. Decide whether the plan should improve your current role, qualify you for an adjacent responsibility, support a portfolio or test a career move.

Review the plan with a manager, practitioner or career professional when access, credentials or hiring expectations are unclear.
